There’s something special about experiencing a Disney cruise at different stages of life. I’ve had the opportunity to sail solo, experience the magic with a baby, cruise again with a toddler, and now prepare for a Disney cruise while pregnant.
And let me tell you: every one of those experiences looks a little different!
Cruising solo meant I could plan my days around whatever I wanted to do. Cruising with a baby meant thinking about naps, feeding schedules, and all the little things that make traveling with an infant easier. Cruising with a toddler introduced a whole new level of adventure, energy, and planning.
Now, as I prepare to experience Disney Cruise Line during pregnancy, I’m looking at cruising from an entirely new perspective.
If you’re expecting and considering a Disney cruise, there are a few important things to know before you book. From Disney Cruise Line’s pregnancy policy to packing essentials and ways to make your vacation more comfortable, here’s what I would want another expecting mom to know before setting sail.
Can You Go on a Disney Cruise While Pregnant?
Yes! Disney Cruise Line allows pregnant guests to sail, provided they meet the cruise line’s pregnancy requirements.
However, there is one important rule you need to know before booking.
Disney Cruise Line does not permit guests to sail if they have entered their 24th week of pregnancy by embarkation day or will enter their 24th week at any point during the cruise. This policy is strictly enforced. A doctor’s note or a signed waiver will not make an exception. Read Disney Cruise Line’s official pregnancy policy.
That means you need to consider how many weeks pregnant you will be on the day you board and how far along you will be when you return.
For example, if you will reach 24 weeks pregnant while you’re onboard, you will not be permitted to sail, even if you’re still under 24 weeks on embarkation day.
My biggest recommendation? Check your dates carefully before putting down a deposit, especially if you are booking a cruise several months in advance.
Also, remember that being within Disney’s permitted pregnancy window does not automatically mean cruising is medically appropriate for every pregnancy. Talk with your healthcare provider about your specific circumstances and itinerary before booking.
What Is It Like to Cruise While Pregnant?
One thing I love about Disney Cruise Line is that there are so many ways to enjoy a sailing. You don’t have to spend every moment rushing from one activity to the next to have a memorable vacation.
And honestly, I think that can be especially appealing during pregnancy!
Give Yourself Permission to Slow Down
One of the biggest things I would keep in mind while cruising pregnant is that I might not have the same energy I would on a trip without a baby on the way.
Instead of feeling like I have to experience every activity, show, and port adventure, I would prioritize the things I genuinely want to do.
Maybe that means enjoying breakfast without rushing, spending some time on deck, watching a show in the evening, or heading back to the stateroom for a rest.
You can still enjoy the magic without having a packed schedule.
Make Dining Part of the Experience
One of my favorite things about a Disney cruise is the dining experience. With rotational dining, you get to experience different themed restaurants throughout your sailing.
When pregnant, I would pay a little more attention to what I’m ordering and any food safety recommendations from my healthcare provider.
If you have dietary restrictions, food aversions, or questions about how something is prepared, let your dining team know. Disney Cruise Line also provides information about accommodating dietary requests and food allergies.
And don’t underestimate the value of having meals included in your cruise fare. When you’re tired or simply don’t feel like going out to find a restaurant, having dining options right on the ship can make vacation life easier.
Choose Activities That Match Your Energy
You can enjoy plenty of Disney cruise experiences without trying to do everything.
Consider prioritizing:
- Broadway-style shows and other onboard entertainment.
- Character experiences and photo opportunities.
- Deck parties and themed nights, if you feel up to them.
- Relaxing on deck and enjoying the ocean views.
- Poolside time or a quiet afternoon in your stateroom.
- Enjoying the ship’s restaurants, cafés, and lounges.
Always check the requirements for individual activities. Some experiences may have restrictions or may not be appropriate for your circumstances during pregnancy.
Be Flexible With Port Days
Port days can involve walking, heat, transportation, and long stretches away from the ship. What sounds exciting when you book your vacation may feel different when the day actually arrives.
I would look for excursions that match my comfort level and ask my healthcare provider about any activities that could be strenuous or carry additional risks.
You don’t have to book an excursion at every port. Sometimes a slower day is exactly what you need.
What to Pack for a Disney Cruise While Pregnant
Packing for a cruise during pregnancy doesn’t have to be complicated, but I would bring a few extra things to help make the trip more comfortable.
Here’s what I would put on my pregnancy-specific packing list.
1. Comfortable Clothing
Bring clothes that fit comfortably throughout the day, especially if you’re experiencing bloating or your bump is growing.
My list would include:
- Maternity shorts, dresses, or other comfortable outfits.
- Loose-fitting clothing for warm days.
- A swimsuit that feels comfortable on your changing body.
- Comfortable walking shoes with good support.
- Sandals that are easy to put on and take off.
- A light sweater or jacket for indoor spaces and breezy evenings.
- Pajamas that don’t feel restrictive.
You don’t need a completely separate vacation wardrobe. Focus on pieces you can mix and match and feel good wearing.
2. Your Pregnancy Essentials
These are the items I would want to keep accessible rather than tucked away in checked luggage.
- Prenatal vitamins and any prescribed medications.
- A copy of relevant medical information and emergency contacts.
- Your healthcare provider’s contact information.
- Any pregnancy-related supplies you regularly use.
- A refillable water bottle.
- Snacks that agree with your stomach, where permitted.
- Any compression garments recommended by your healthcare provider.
Keep medications in their original packaging when possible, and carry necessary medications with you rather than placing them in checked luggage.
If you are considering medication for nausea, seasickness, or another symptom, ask your healthcare provider which options are appropriate during pregnancy before your trip.
3. Items for Staying Comfortable
Depending on your symptoms and stage of pregnancy, you may also want to bring:
- A small crossbody bag or lightweight backpack.
- A hat and pregnancy-appropriate sun protection.
- Lip balm and moisturizer.
- A portable handheld fan for hot port days.
- Comfortable clothes for lounging in your stateroom.
- Supportive pillows or other familiar comfort items, if needed and permitted.
My philosophy is to pack for comfort first. You can still put together cute cruise outfits without sacrificing how you feel in them!
4. Travel Documents and Important Information
Before leaving home, double-check your travel documents and make sure your identification and required cruise documents are easily accessible.
I would also keep copies of important medical information and review my health insurance and travel insurance coverage before sailing.
Disney Cruise Line’s onboard Health Center can provide certain medical services, but it has limited capabilities and is not equipped to provide critical care for premature deliveries. Medical services onboard can also incur additional charges. Learn more about onboard medical care.
If you are considering travel insurance, read the policy carefully to understand its pregnancy-related exclusions and limitations, including emergency medical care and evacuation.
Tips for Staying Comfortable on a Disney Cruise While Pregnant
Beyond what you pack, a few small decisions can make a difference in how you experience your vacation.
Stay Hydrated
Between warm weather, walking around the ship, and spending time in port, it can be easy to forget to drink enough water.
Keep water accessible throughout the day and follow your healthcare provider’s advice about hydration, particularly if you’re dealing with nausea or vomiting.
Don’t Overdo It on Embarkation Day
Embarkation day is exciting! You’re finally onboard, the ship is beautiful, and there is so much to explore.
But I would resist the urge to do everything immediately.
Give yourself time to get settled, eat something, hydrate, and familiarize yourself with the ship. You have the rest of your sailing to enjoy it.
Be Mindful of Heat and Walking Distances
Depending on your itinerary, you may encounter hot weather, direct sunlight, long walks, and crowded areas.
Wear comfortable shoes, take breaks when needed, seek shade, and don’t hesitate to change your plans if you aren’t feeling well.
Listen to Your Body
This is probably the most important tip I can give.
Pregnancy can look different from one person to another, and even your own energy levels can vary from day to day.
If you need a nap, take one. If you need to skip an activity, skip it. If you feel unwell, seek medical advice rather than pushing through.
Your vacation should not become another thing you have to power through.
What About Seasickness During Pregnancy?
If you’re worried about motion sickness, it’s worth thinking about this before your sailing.
Some people experience motion sickness on a cruise, and pregnancy-related nausea can make it especially important to have a plan.
Before traveling, talk with your healthcare provider about prevention and treatment options that are appropriate for you. Don’t assume that an over-the-counter medication, supplement, or motion-sickness remedy is safe simply because it’s commonly used by other cruisers.
You can also ask your travel advisor about itinerary considerations and cabin location preferences, although no cabin location can guarantee that you won’t feel the ship’s movement.
If you begin feeling unwell onboard, contact the ship’s medical team for guidance.
What If You Need Medical Care While Sailing?
This is something every expecting parent should consider before booking any cruise, regardless of the cruise line.
Disney Cruise Line has an onboard Health Center that provides non-emergency care during clinic hours, with a doctor and nurse on call around the clock for medical emergencies. However, the ship’s medical facilities have limitations, and some conditions may require transfer to a shoreside medical facility.
Before your trip:
- Discuss your itinerary and pregnancy with your healthcare provider.
- Review your health insurance and travel insurance coverage.
- Understand what your insurance covers outside your home country.
- Check whether emergency medical evacuation is covered.
- Keep your medical information and emergency contacts accessible.
These precautions are especially important when traveling by ship because access to a hospital may not be immediate.
Cruising Solo, With a Baby, With a Toddler, and Now Pregnant
Having experienced Disney Cruise Line at different stages of life has given me a new appreciation for how much your travel priorities can change.
When I cruised solo, I could focus on my own interests and enjoy the freedom of choosing what I wanted to do.
Cruising with a baby meant planning around feeding, naps, diaper changes, and everything that comes with traveling with an infant. The little details mattered more, and being prepared made a difference.
Cruising with a toddler brought a different kind of adventure. There was more curiosity, more movement, and a whole new perspective on the experiences that make Disney so special.
Now, cruising while pregnant adds another layer to the experience. I’m thinking about comfort, energy, hydration, and making sure I can enjoy the trip without overcommitting myself.
Every stage has its own challenges, but each one also offers something special.
And that’s one of my favorite things about family travel: the same vacation can feel completely different as your family grows.
Is a Disney Cruise Worth It While Pregnant?
For someone who meets Disney Cruise Line’s pregnancy requirements and has clearance from their healthcare provider to travel, a cruise may be a wonderful way to enjoy a vacation before welcoming a new baby.
You have entertainment, dining, themed experiences, and beautiful ocean views all in one place. You can make plans, but you can also leave room for rest and flexibility.
The key is to plan around your needs rather than trying to recreate the exact vacation you would have taken before pregnancy.
Check the rules, choose an itinerary that works for you, pack thoughtfully, and give yourself permission to take things at your own pace.
And, of course, remember that every pregnancy is different. What works for one person may not work for another.
