Disneyland and Walt Disney World approach the Halloween season very differently. One can be easier to navigate and packed with seasonal details, while the other turns an entire vacation destination into a much bigger fall experience. And when you’re traveling with kids, the “best” choice really comes down to your family’s ages, priorities, budget, tolerance for walking, and how much Halloween you actually want built into your vacation.

Halloween at Disneyland: Smaller Resort, BIG Halloween Atmosphere

Halloween Time at Disneyland Resort this year is happening now through October 31, 2026, with Disney California Adventure’s Halloween décor in place beginning August 18. Both Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure get into the Halloween spirit with seasonal décor, character costumes, specialty food and entertainment, and Halloween-themed attractions.

One of Disneyland’s biggest advantages for families is convenience. The two theme parks are located directly across from one another, with Downtown Disney and the Disneyland Resort hotels also within easy walking distance.

That matters when you’re traveling with children.

If your 4-year-old melts down after lunch, you’re not dealing with a massive transportation operation just to get back to your hotel. If your teenager wants to stay late while your younger child needs an earlier bedtime, splitting up your day can also be considerably easier.

The Halloween details are everywhere.

At Disneyland Park, Main Street, U.S.A. gets a major Halloween makeover, including hundreds of hand-carved pumpkins.

And then there are the seasonal attraction overlays.

Haunted Mansion Holiday combines the Haunted Mansion with The Nightmare Before Christmas, while Disney California Adventure gets Halloween fun in Cars Land and Guardians of the Galaxy – Monsters After Dark. For families who love Disney Halloween without necessarily wanting an entire vacation centered around Halloween, Disneyland can be a fantastic fit.

And Then There’s Oogie Boogie Bash

If you’re looking for a true Halloween party, Disneyland has Oogie Boogie Bash – A Disney Halloween Party at Disney California Adventure. This is a separate-ticket event featuring Halloween entertainment, character experiences, trick-or-treat trails, special attractions, and more. Guests are also encouraged to dress in costume!

The trick-or-treat trails are particularly fun for families because they’re more than simply walking around collecting candy. Guests encounter Disney villains and other characters along immersive trails.

Important planning note: Oogie Boogie Bash is extremely popular. For 2026, general-admission tickets are sold out, so this is an experience that requires advance planning rather than something you can assume you can add once you arrive.

Family tip:

If Oogie Boogie Bash is the main reason you’re considering Disneyland for Halloween, don’t book your trip first and figure out the party later. That’s backward. The party date needs to be part of the vacation planning process from the beginning.

Halloween at Walt Disney World: Make Halloween Part of the Vacation

Walt Disney World takes a different approach.

Instead of having two parks within steps of each other, you’re dealing with a massive resort featuring four theme parks, Disney resorts, Disney Springs, and a much larger overall vacation footprint.

During fall, Halloween and autumn touches are spread throughout the resort.

And the big-ticket Halloween event is Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party at Magic Kingdom.

For 2026, the party runs on select nights from August 7 through October 31. It is a separate-ticket event running from 7 p.m. to midnight, with party guests able to enter Magic Kingdom as early as 4 p.m.

That extra time can be important when you’re traveling with kids.

You don’t necessarily have to arrive at 7 p.m. and then try to squeeze everything into five hours. Arriving at 4 p.m. gives your family time to have dinner, experience attractions, and get settled before the party officially begins.

Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party Is a Different Experience

During the party, families can trick-or-treat throughout Magic Kingdom, experience Halloween entertainment, and enjoy select attractions with Halloween-themed elements. There are also character opportunities and special entertainment that you won’t experience during a regular Magic Kingdom day.

And yes—kids can collect a lot of candy.

For families with younger children, however, there’s one thing you need to think about carefully: The party goes until midnight. That’s fantastic if your kids can handle a late night. It can be brutal if your 5-year-old normally falls asleep at 8:30. A midnight ending doesn’t mean your family has to stay until midnight. But you should be honest about your children’s stamina before spending money on a separate party ticket.

Don’t Forget About the Cost of the Halloween Party

Here’s something families sometimes overlook: Your regular park ticket doesn’t automatically include the Halloween party. Both Oogie Boogie Bash and Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party require separate event tickets.

And because these parties can be expensive, you should ask yourself:

Are we buying another park day—or are we buying a completely different experience? That’s an important distinction. If your kids aren’t interested in trick-or-treating, costumes, Halloween characters, or special entertainment, you may get more value from spending your evening enjoying the regular parks, resort pool, or a character meal.

But if your kids LOVE Halloween? The party may become one of the most memorable parts of the vacation.

What About Families Who DON’T Want a Halloween Party?

Here’s some good news:

You don’t need to attend a Halloween party to experience Disney Halloween.

At Disneyland, Halloween Time includes seasonal décor, themed attractions, specialty food, characters, and other experiences without requiring an Oogie Boogie Bash ticket.

Walt Disney World also has fall experiences beyond the Halloween party. For example, EPCOT’s 2026 International Food & Wine Festival runs from August 27 through November 21, and families can participate in Pluto’s Pumpkin Pursuit, a Disney-themed pumpkin scavenger hunt.

This is an important distinction. You can have a fantastic Disney fall vacation without ever attending a Halloween party.

So Which Disney Destination Is Right for YOUR Family?

Instead of asking:

“Which one is better?”

Ask these questions:

1. How old are your children?

The younger your children are, the more important convenience, naps, bedtime and transportation become.

2. How important is Halloween itself?

If Halloween is the main event, you’ll want to build your trip around the party and seasonal offerings.

If Halloween is simply a fun bonus, you have much more flexibility.

3. How long do you want to vacation?

A short trip can work extremely well at Disneyland because the resort is compact.

Don’t buy a midnight Halloween party ticket for a child who is miserable by 9 p.m. just because the party sounds amazing. You know your kids. Plan accordingly.

Characters?

Trick-or-treating?

Thrill rides?

Food?

Disney attractions?

A relaxing resort vacation?

The answer can completely change which destination makes sense.

The Biggest Mistake Families Make With a Disney Halloween Vacation

They try to do everything. And Halloween at Disney can give you an overwhelming amount of “everything.”

Special food.

Seasonal merchandise.

Halloween characters.
