The wildest ride in the wilderness is officially back! After an extended refurbishment, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has reopened, welcoming guests once again to race through its iconic desert landscape of twists, turns, and runaway mine train thrills.
While the ride’s classic charm is still very much intact, a few key updates make this version feel refreshingly new. One of the most notable changes is the updated 38” height requirement, bringing it more in line with family-friendly coasters and making it a more comparable experience to Seven Dwarfs Mine Train.
The biggest improvement, however, is the ride’s smoothness. Longtime fans will immediately notice the difference, gone is the rough, jolting track that once made it feel like you were getting an unexpected chiropractor visit. The newly refined track creates a much more comfortable experience, especially for younger riders or those who may have found the previous version a bit too intense.
Interestingly, this smoother ride experience also makes the attraction feel quieter overall. Without the constant rattling and jostling, you’re able to take in more of the environment and theming without distraction.
Speaking of theming, the refreshed cave scene stands out as a highlight of the refurbishment. It adds a nice visual moment to the ride and enhances the storytelling in a subtle but effective way.
Overall, the updated Big Thunder Mountain Railroad strikes a great balance between nostalgia and modern comfort. It still delivers the fast-paced fun guests expect, but now with a smoother, more family-friendly feel that makes it easier than ever to enjoy.
