Disney’s Animal Kingdom is entering a new chapter.
With DinoLand U.S.A. now closed, construction is well underway on Tropical Americas, a brand-new area that will transform this corner of the park into the fictional town of Pueblo Esperanza.
Set to open in 2027, the new land will combine immersive storytelling, lush environments and three new attractions inspired by some very familiar Disney characters and stories. Recent looks at the project have given fans an even better idea of what guests can expect when the land finally opens.
Welcome to Pueblo Esperanza
Tropical Americas is designed to feel less like a traditional theme park land and more like a community with its own history.
Pueblo Esperanza will draw inspiration from the tropical regions of the Western Hemisphere, including parts of Central America, South America and Mexico. Disney Imagineers have been researching the region’s architecture, landscapes, culture and craftsmanship as they develop the new area.
The result is expected to be a colorful, lush environment filled with plazas, greenery and architectural details designed to make the town feel like a real place.
Disney has described the new land as an 11-acre area, and it will bring a completely different atmosphere to the former DinoLand U.S.A. location.
But the attractions are where things get especially exciting.
Indiana Jones Is Coming to Animal Kingdom
One of the biggest additions will be a brand-new Indiana Jones attraction replacing DINOSAUR.
While Disney parks around the world already have Indiana Jones experiences, this attraction will feature its own original storyline created specifically for Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
The story begins when Indiana Jones discovers a remarkably preserved Maya temple. Of course, Indy isn’t going to simply walk away from a discovery like that.
Instead, guests will join him as he explores the ancient temple in search of a mysterious creature said to be hidden within.
Disney has emphasized that this attraction will be unlike any other Indiana Jones attraction currently found at a Disney park.
Recent construction progress has given fans their first real glimpses of the massive temple structure beginning to take shape.
And considering the attraction is being built within the existing footprint of DINOSAUR, it will be fascinating to see how Disney transforms the space while creating an entirely new experience.
An Encanto Attraction Is Coming to Disney World
For fans of Encanto, Tropical Americas is bringing something Disney has never done before: the first-ever Encanto ride-through attraction.
The attraction will take guests inside the magical Casita and into the world of the Madrigal family.
The story picks up after Antonio receives his special gift—the ability to communicate with animals. His bedroom has transformed into a lush rainforest, setting the stage for an adventure through his newly magical surroundings.
Guests will journey alongside Antonio while encountering the Madrigal family and the magic of Casita along the way.
Disney Imagineers have even traveled to Colombia as part of the creative process, visiting locations and learning more about the architecture, landscapes and cultural influences that helped inspire the original animated film.
Recent previews of the project have also offered a closer look at elements of the attraction, making it one of the most anticipated additions to Animal Kingdom for many Disney fans.
A New Carousel for the Littlest Adventurers
Tropical Americas won’t just be about major new rides.
The land will also feature a family-friendly carousel with a very Disney twist.
Instead of traditional horses, the carousel will feature beautifully carved animals inspired by beloved Disney characters and stories.
Disney has previously shown off a carving of Kevin from Up, giving fans an idea of the whimsical creatures that could eventually spin around the attraction.
It’s a smaller addition compared to the Indiana Jones and Encanto attractions, but it could become an especially popular option for families with younger children.
The carousel is also another way Disney is tying the land’s storytelling into the idea of a local craftsman creating something special for the people of Pueblo Esperanza.
More Than Just Three Attractions
While the rides are getting most of the attention, Tropical Americas is being designed as an entire environment rather than simply a collection of attractions.
The centerpiece will be Pueblo Esperanza, a bustling town surrounded by the natural beauty of the Tropical Americas.
Disney has also announced that the land will feature a large hacienda that will become one of the largest quick-service restaurants at Walt Disney World. A central fountain will provide another gathering space within the town, while the surrounding landscaping and architecture will help establish the area’s sense of place.
There will also be a new themed play area for children, giving younger guests another way to explore the land.
What Happened to DinoLand U.S.A.?
The transformation marks the end of an era for Animal Kingdom.
DinoLand U.S.A. permanently closed on February 2, 2026, with the final day for DINOSAUR and several surrounding locations taking place on February 1.
Now, the area is being completely reimagined.
Rather than simply replacing one attraction, Disney is using the opportunity to create an entirely new land with its own setting, stories and attractions.
Construction has progressed significantly throughout 2026, with structures for the Encanto attraction, carousel and Indiana Jones experience becoming increasingly visible.
When Will Tropical Americas Open?
Disney currently expects Tropical Americas to open at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in 2027.
An exact opening date has not yet been announced.
With construction continuing and more details being revealed, there’s still plenty we don’t know about the final experience. That makes Tropical Americas one of the projects Disney fans will want to keep watching as we get closer to its opening.
